Opposition Leader Mark Golding lauds police for reduction in murders, but joins call for the use of body-worn cameras
Opposition Leader and People’s National Party (PNP) President, Mark Golding, has lauded the police for a reduction in murders, but has joined the call for the use of body-worn cameras.
According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force, murders are down by 37.7% compared to last year.
However, while the country celebrates this achievement, concerns have been raised about the high number of fatal shootings by members of the security forces.
According to the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM), 111 people have been fatally shot since the start of the year.
Last week, human rights lobby group Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) held a peaceful protest in St. Andrew and amplified calls for the use of body-worn cameras.
Speaking at the PNP East Central St. Catherine campaign rally last evening, Mr. Golding joined in the call.
He said the police are doing good work, but stressed the need for greater accountability.
Meantime, Mr. Golding assured that the next PNP administration will tackle crime and corruption.
