Opposition confirms it will take legal action against gov’t in Portmore parish status matter

The Opposition People’s National Party, PNP has confirmed that it will take legal action against the government in the Portmore parish status matter.

On February 11, the governing Jamaica Labour Party, J-L-P used its majority in the house of representatives to pass the bill to make Portmore the fifteenth parish.

The bill was also passed in the Senate last Friday.

It will go next to the Governor General for assent.

However, the PNP objects to portmore becoming a parish, noting that the move is unconstitutional and will give the J-L-P political advantage among other things.

The PNP has vowed to take several actions, to prevent the bill from becoming law.

Speaking at a townhall meeting in Portmore, last evening, PNP’s Legal Advisor Anthony Hylton confirmed that one of those actions will be the filing of a lawsuit.
