Opposition cautions government against granting greater concession to JPS than necessary

The opposition is cautioning the government that no greater concession should be granted to the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) than is necessary, for it to secure funding for restoration works.

Energy Minister Daryl Vaz, has disclosed that government is in discussions with JPS in relation to how it can assist to work out a formula which will allow the utility company to raise the funds required to restore the grid.

The company has been carrying out restoration works, with several towns and communities, still without power following Hurricane Melissa on October 28.

Mr Vaz indicated that the discussions are taking place at the highest level and he will be updating parliament next Tuesday, on the recovery plan based on the discussions with JPS shareholders and management .

The current JPS licence expires in July 2027.

Opposition spokesman on Energy Phillip Paulwell says he wants the government to update the country next week on the negotiations for a new licence.

He points out that the opposition has stated its position in relation to the new licence.
