Opposition calls on Vaz to ensure infrastructure issues at airports are addressed swiftly

The opposition People’s National Party, (PNP) is calling on Transport Minister Daryl Vaz to ensure that infrastructure related issues at the island’s international airports are addressed swiftly.

The appeal follows a temporary closure of the runway at the Sangster International Airport in Montego-Bay on Sunday, reportedly due to minor damage.

As a result, inbound flights were diverted to the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and outbound flights were delayed.

Landings resumed at 5 p.m. on Sunday and repair works were set to be completed yesterday.

However, opposition spokesman on Transport Mikael Phillips has expressed concern about the safety of the runway.

Noting that there have been other incidents at the island’s two main international airports this year, Mr. Phillips said there should not be a repeat of the incidents.

He added that a report on the latest incident must be made available to the public.
