Opposition calls on government to provide update on actions regarding new JPS licence
Opposition Spokesman on Energy, Phillip Paulwell is calling on the government to provide an update to the country on the progress regarding the new Jamaica Public Service (JPS) license.
The current JPS license expires on July 8, 2027.
However, the government must signal its intent to discuss the terms of the new electricity license at least two years before the existing one expires, meaning this must happen by July of this year.
If this is not done, the license will continue with the same terms and conditions for another 10 years.
Mr. Paulwell raised the issue of the new JPS license at a People’s National Party candidate presentation meeting in Northeast St. Andrew last night.
He told party supporters that there are important changes that should be included in the new JPS license.
Mr. Paulwell emphasized that these changes should include consumer protection provisions.
He also accused the government of being tardy in addressing this issue.
Energy Minister, Daryl Vaz, in giving an update on the energy sector earlier this month, stated that the process began last November and that the ministry is engaging the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) to provide international expertise.
