Opposition calls for standardization of salaries in the tourism sector
Opposition Leader Mark Golding says a mechanism needs to be implemented to ensure that all tourism workers earn a fair wage for their services.
The statement follows the release of the findings of a recent salary survey, which reportedly found that the sector is offering competitive remuneration.
It also found that there are opportunities for improvement in salaries at some properties.
The survey was done by a working committee, established by the Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) last month, to investigate the root causes of issues that led to unrest in the tourism sector.
The unrest included service withdrawal by some hotel staff members, at resorts across 4 parishes, in protest over poor wages and working conditions.
Speaking during a tour of craft markets in Ocho Rios, St. Ann, Mr. Golding said salaries in the industry need to be standardized.
This position was supported by People’s National Party (PNP) candidate for North East St. Ann, Dr. Ryan Simpson who stressed that even with recent increases, hotel workers are still earning too little.
