Operators of SIA defend the airport’s safety, following concerns raised by the Opposition

Following concerns raised by the Opposition, MBJ Airports Limited the operator of Sangster International Airport is reassuring the public of the airport’s safety.

The statement follows a temporary runway closure of the airport on Sunday due to minor damage which has been repaired.

Following the runway closure, Opposition Spokesman on Transport Mikael Phillips said the incident raised questions about MBJ Airports Limited inspections and maintenance of the airport.

In response, the company has since indicated that there are no operational issues affecting runway safety or any major infrastructure at the airport.

It said it remains committed to maintaining high standards of security and safety, including stringent maintenance and safety protocols.

MBJ Airports Limited noted that its most recent upgrade at the airport was made between 2021 and 2023, when $70 million was invested into extending the runway and completing related projects.

The company emphasized that while regular assessments of all components are conducted according to schedule, unforeseen issues may arise.

It said in such cases, activities may be briefly suspended as a precaution and necessary safeguards implemented to ensure a prompt and safe resumption of services, as demonstrated during the recent incident.
