One man fatally shot, 10 people detained and 3 guns seized during major operation in St. Catherine
A man was fatally shot, ten people detained, and three firearms seized, during a pre-dawn operation in Gregory Park, St. Catherine on Thursday.
The incident follows another operation in the St. Catherine south division yesterday, which resulted in the seizure of three firearms, including two rifles. That’s a total of six firearms seized in the division in less than 20 hours.
Head of the division, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Christopher Phillips said the operation in Caymanas Garden, began at midnight.
He said police on operation were cordoning off the area when they observed some men running.
The officers who pursued the men, were reportedly fired upon and they returned the fire.
A man, whose identity has not yet been released, was later found suffering from gunshot wounds.
He was taken to the Spanish Town Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
SSP Phillips said a nine-millimetre pistol was taken from the man.
He said the operation lasted about eight hours.
SSP Phillips has assured residents that the police will not leave them to the mercy of the criminals and that the operations targeting criminals will continue.
Meantime, the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has begun a probe into the fatal shooting of the unidentified man.
