One death confirmed in Hanover; search launched for man washed away during Hurricane Beryl

A woman was killed when a tree fell on her house in Green Island, Hanover yesterday.

Meanwhile, up to late evening, efforts were continuing to rescue a young man who was washed away by flood waters. That incident occurred in Arnett Gardens in Kingston.

Acting Director General of the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM) Richard Thompson gave the update last evening.

He pointed to two other incidents where trees fell on homes.

In addition, some patients at the Bellevue Hospital had to be relocated after roof damage to a section of the facility.

Meantime, up to 955 persons were in shelters across the country yesterday.

Mr. Thompson said two shelters had roof damage and the people in those facilities had to be relocated.

And reports of flooding have come in from several sections of the island.

Mr. Thompson said the parishes affected are St. Elizabeth, St. Catherine, St. Mary, Portland, Clarendon, and Hanover.

He says storm surge was reported along the northern and southern coasts.
