NWU says recent protests by hotel workers highlight need for them to have proper trade union representation

The National Workers Union (NWU) has lamented that hotel workers upset about poor working conditions and inadequate wages do not have trade union representation to advocate on their behalf.

NWU General Secretary Granville Valentine expressed concern that following protests by workers at 2 hotels, meetings were held involving government and hotel management.

He said these discussions, while helpful, lacked the input of an entity to lobby for staff.

Last month, when staff at the Royalton in Negril, Westmoreland staged a protest, the NWU indicated that it stands ready to represent the workers.

Yesterday, staff at the Secrets and Breathless resorts in Montego Bay, St. James staged a protest.

Mr. Valentine said the union stands ready to also represent those workers at the Secrets and Breathless resorts.

He said aside from an individual union the workers would benefit from advocacy by a joint industrial council for the tourism industry.

He reiterated that hotel workers deserve better treatment.
