Novak Djokovic wins opening match at Wimbledon Tennis Championship
Even-time champion Novak Djokovic continued his proud record of never having lost a first-round match at the Wimbledon Tennis Championship with a three set victory over Pedro Cachin earlier today.
The world number two was kept honest by a fine effort from the debutant and it took him two hours and 15 minutes to see off the Argentine 6-3, 6-3, 7-6.
On the women’s side top seed iga Swiatek produced a dominant performance over China’s Zhu Lin winning 6-1, 6-3 against the world number 34.
Swiatek is joined in the second round by American fourth seed Jessica Pegula and French fifth seed Caroline Garcia.
Pegula beat fellow American Lauren Davis 6-2 6-7 6-3, while Garcia won 6-4 6-3 against another American player, Katie Volynets.
Also advancing were Belarusian two time grand slam champion 19th seed Victoria Azarenka, Russian 12th seed Veronika Kudermetova while in the upset of the round so far Russian Liudmila Samsonova, seeded 15th, was beaten by Romania’s Ana Bogdan.
