Novak Djokovic faces tough road to Australian Open final
Defending champion Jannik Sinner and 10-time winner Novak Djokovic have landed on opposite sides of the bracket after the draw for the 2025 Australian Open was made at Melbourne Park on Thursday.
The top-ranked Sinner, bidding for back-to-back titles, will begin his campaign against Nicolas Jarry and also has Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton and Daniil Medvedev in his half of the draw.
Djokovic meanwhile launches his latest bid for a record-extending 11th title against wildcard Nishesh Basavareddy and could face big-serving American Reilly Opelka in the third round, no. 3 Carlos Alcaraz in the quarterfinals, with second seed Alexander Zverev a potential semi-final opponent.
Over in the women’s event, title holder Aryna Sabalenka drew a tough opening match against 2017 US Open champion Sloane Stephens and also has 17-year-old Mirra Andreeva and China’s Zheng qinwen in her section.
Third-seeded Coco Gauff, who is a potential semifinal rival for Sabalenka, has a challenging first-round match against former champion Sofia Kenin and is in the same section of the draw as four-time major winner Naomi Osaka and seventh-seeded Jessica Pegula.
Women’s second seed Iga Swiatek, meanwhile, plays Katerina Siniakova in the first round and is in the other half of the draw with 2022 Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina.
The main draw gets underway in Melbourne on Sunday.
