NIA says decision to increase DPP and AG retirement age is an assault to good governance
The National Integrity Action, (NIA) says the government’s decision to increase the age of retirement for the director of public prosecutions, (DPP) and the Auditor General is an assault on good governance.
The bill to raise the age of retirement for the DPP and AG from 60 to 65 years was approved in the Lower House, on Tuesday.
In a release on Wednesday, the NIA said the government has fast-tracked this amendment without consulting the leader of the opposition on the matter.
It said this increases public concern that the government is deliberate in its actions to avoid meaningful consultation.
Speaking with Irie Fm news on Thursday morning, founding Director of the NIA, Professor Trevor Munroe sought to remind the government that it should avoid appearing authoritarian.
He called on the government to outline the reason or reasons for extending the contract of the DPP.
He expressed hope that Friday’s sitting of the senate will provide an opportunity for a response.
