Newly appointed Governor of the Bank of Jamaica (BOJ), Dr. Brian Langrin, says headline and core inflation increased in the last quarter.
He made the disclosure at a BOJ press conference this morning.
According to Dr. Langrin, headline inflation increased to 7.5% in July, up from 6.7% in June and up from 3.3% a year earlier.
He said core inflation rose to 5.2% from 5% in June.
According to Dr. Langrin, factors such as the increases in public passenger fares, higher electricity rates and increasing agricultural prices had a direct effect on the inflation rate.
He said he expects inflation to remain above the 4 to 6% target range during the next quarter, before moving back to the target range over the near term.
He noted that these pressures are expected to be maintained by the relatively stable exchange rate.
