New polymer banknotes to be introduced by June 2023
Finance Minister, Dr. Nigel Clarke says the new polymer banknotes, will be introduced within, the first 6 months of 2023.
He made the statement, during the launch of the new notes, at the Bank of Jamaica’s Office, in Kingston, this morning.
The 6 new notes, are a part of efforts, to upgrade the currency in circulation, to save cost through increased durability; enhanced security; and, enhanced features, to better meet the needs, of the visually impaired, among other things.
They include, a $2,000 bill, bearing the images of late former prime ministers, Michael Manley and Edward Seaga.
Dr. Clarke said the BOJ is working with financial institutions, for the rolling out of the new notes, which will occur by June, the latest.
Meantime, Dr. Clarke, stressed that it is important, that the bank notes reflect Jamaica’s history.
