NEPA said railcars from UC Rusal train which derailed on August 9 removed from Bog Walk area
The railcars from the UC Rusal train, which derailed on Saturday August 9, have been removed from the Bog Walk area in St. Catherine, with minimal impact to the natural environment.
The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) gave the update today.
The train, was transporting alumina from Ewarton Works to Port Esquivel, when three of its hopper-cars went over an embankment.
NEPA said the incident resulted in only minimal spillage of the alumina.
Assessments revealed that, this was confined to the base of the embankment.
NEPA also observed that the Rio Cobre was not contaminated.
It said the spilt material was not hazardous and there was no fish kill.
NEPA noted that it monitored the cleanup operation by UC Rusal and is satisfied that this was done in a manner that preserved the area’s natural environment.
