NEPA: no significant environmental threat following Windalco train derailment
There is no significant environmental threat following derailment of a U C Rusal/ Windalco train in the Bog Walk Gorge in St. Catherine, at the weekend.
The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) said an evaluation found that none of the derailed cars contained hazardous material.
On Saturday, August 9 the bauxite train derailed just before reaching the tunnel in the gorge.
The train had seven box cars transporting alumina to the port.
Three of them toppled over the retaining embankment, with one partially entering the Rio Cobre.
Nepa conducted an assessment of the site and deduced that the risk to the environment is low.
It said ground inspections and drone imagery confirmed that there was no significant threat to the environment, as alumina spillage was minimal and confined to the base of the embankment.
Nepa also reported that there was no sign of oil contamination or fish death in the vicinity of the incident.
It noted that the river’s condition remained unchanged since Saturday afternoon.
The agency said it is overseeing the cleanup operation, which is being undertaken by U C Rusal, to ensure that the surrounding environment remains safe.
