National 800 meters record holder Navasky Anderson runs new national record
National record holder Navasky Anderson ran a new national record last night at the DC Track Championships in Fairfax, Virginia , as he ran an impressive 1 minute 44.70 seconds to finish second in the men’s 800 meters race.
The event was won by Edose Ibadin of Nigeria, who ran a sensational 1 minute 44.65 seconds.
In the meantime, the record-breaking performance by Anderson surpassed his previous national record of 1 minute 45.02, which he had set on June 10, last year , at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.
Back then, he broke the 45-year old national mark of 1 minute 45.30 set on May 13, 1977, by Seymour Newman in Kingston.
Anderson’s new national record also qualified him for another World Championship as he secured the qualifying standard for next month’s championships in Budapest, Hungary.
He ran the exact time needed to earn qualification on the deadline day.
Anderson, who finished second at the National Senior Championship in the two laps event, became the first Jamaican man to break the elusive 1 minute 45 seconds barrier for the 800 metres event.
