Mount Pleasant edge Chapelton Maroons to extend lead in the Wray and Nephew Premier League
Mount Pleasant continued their dominant march at the top of the Wray and Nephew Premier League, securing their 19th win of the season with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Chapelton Maroons at Drax Hall on Thursday. The all-important goal came in the 1st minute of second-half stoppage time, with Nicolas Nelson confidently converting from the penalty spot.
The win extends Mount Pleasant’s win streak to three games, further solidifying their place at the summit of the table with 61 points. Meanwhile, Chapelton Maroons are still struggling, having now gone six games without a victory, and remain in 12th position in the standings on 22 points.
In other match-ups, second-placed Arnett Gardens were held to a goalless draw by fourth-placed Portmore United. With the stalemate, Arnett Gardens improved to 52 points. Portmore United, meanwhile, remain unbeaten in their last 11 matches and are on 41 points.
Third-place Montego Bay United, under the stewardship of returning coach Paul ‘Tegat’ Davis, were unable to find a breakthrough, as they played out a 0-0 draw with Racing United at the Catherine Hall Stadium.
Harbour View, in their fight to avoid relegation, grabbed an important 1-0 win over defending champions Cavalier. Garth Stewart’s sixth-minute goal proved to be the difference, lifting Harbour View to 10th place with 23 points, just four points above the relegation zone.
Meanwhile, the relegation battle took new life as Humble Lion secured a rare victory, defeating Waterhouse 2-1 at Effortville Community Centre. Stephen Barrett scored twice for Humble Lion in the 18th and 75th minutes, while Waterhouse’s Dylon John provided the lone goal for the visitors in the 41st minute. Despite the victory Humble Lion remains at the bottom of the table, leaving Vere United in 13th place with 19 points, and Humble Lion now on 18 points.
In another game, Tivoli Gardens returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over relegation-threatened Vere United at the Edward Seaga Sports Complex, further strengthening their mid-table position in 7th place.
On Wednesday, Dunbeholden extended their fine form, securing their fourth win in five matches with a 1-0 triumph over Molynes United.
