Monument honours star sprinter Shanoya Douglas, Pride of New Haven Heights
A new monument has been unveiled at the entrance of the New Haven Heights community in Granville, Trelawny, celebrating the outstanding achievements of rising track star Shanoya Douglas.
The striking tribute features an image of the 17-year-old Muschett High School sprinter and recognizes her as a “Track and Field Hero” and “Pride of the Community.” The initiative was led by the New Haven Heights Community Association in honor of Douglas’s exceptional season.
Douglas was at the forefront of national and regional attention after winning four gold medals
the 100m, 200m, and 4x100m 4x400m relays at the 52nd Carifta Games in Trinidad in April — a remarkable feat that earned her widespread acclaim. She also secured the Class 2 Girls sprint double at the prestigious ISSA Boys and Girls Championships and triumphed in her signature 200m event in the High School Girls’ race at the inaugural Grand Slam Track Circuit meet held at the National Stadium.
Most recently, Douglas showcased her continued dominance at the JAAA World Championships Preparation #2 meet at the National Stadium, winning the women’s 200m in 23.32 seconds. She followed this with a strong runner-up performance in the women’s 400m, clocking 53.70 seconds behind national senior representative Candice McLeod who won the event in 53.08 seconds.
