Mobay United surge to the top of Wray & Nephew JPL after dominant win

Former champions Montego Bay United are the new leaders of the Wray and Nephew Jamaica Premier League after a commanding 3-1 victory over Tivoli Gardens in their Match Day 4 showdown at the Catherine Hall Stadium on Sunday.

Dwight Merrick set the tone early with strikes in the 5th and 19th minutes before Jourdaine Fletcher made it 3-0 by the half-hour mark. Tivoli pulled one back in the 59th minute through Kavan Wilson, but it was little more than consolation as MoBay extended their winning run to three games. The Xavier Gilbert-coached team now sits at the summit with 10 points.

Elsewhere, Chapelton Maroons—leaders entering the round—suffered their first defeat of the season, falling 1-0 to Arnett Gardens at Turner’s Oval. Roderick Granville netted the game’s only goal in the 57th minute to hand the Junglists back-to-back wins after opening the campaign with two losses. Arnett climbed to sixth on six points, while Chapelton remain on nine but slip to third on goal difference.

Racing United leapfrogged Chapelton into second with a game in hand after beating Treasure Beach 4-2 at the STETHS Complex in Santa Cruz. Javaughn Cole led the charge with goals in the 61st and 72nd minutes, supported by Nickyle Ellis (47th) and Deandre Johnson (85th). Raheem Porter (64th) and Kevoan McGregor (78th) replied for the hosts.

At Drax Hall, Mount Pleasant secured their first win of the season with a dramatic 2-1 comeback against defending champions Cavalier. Christopher Ainsworth gave Cavalier the lead in the 32nd, but late goals from Daniel Green (78th) and Raheem Edwards (89th) sealed the win for last year’s beaten finalists. Mount Pleasant move up to seventh on five points from three games, while Cavalier sit 9th with four.

Earlier at the same venue, Portmore United edged newly promoted Spanish Town Police 1-0, courtesy of a 68th-minute strike from Orlando Russell.

Match Day 4 action concludes on Monday with a double-header at Drewsland Mini Stadium: Molynes United face Dunbeholden at 5 p.m., followed by Waterhouse against Harbour View at 7:30 p.m.
