Miss Lou Remembered On What Would Have Been Her 107th Birthday

Jamaicans are honouring the life and legacy of cultural icon Dr. the Hon. Louise Bennett-Coverley, OM, OJ, MBE, on what would have been her 107th birthday.
Among those paying tribute to the celebrated poet, folklorist and cultural advocate are singer Alaine and Everaldo ‘Pukupoo’ Creary of the Nomadz.
The Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) also marked the occasion with a tribute highlighting Miss Lou’s contribution to Jamaican language, culture and identity.
“Through her poetry, storytelling, and unwavering love for Jamaica, Miss Lou gave our language, culture and people a voice, reminding us to be proud of who we are and where we come from,” the JCDC stated.
Alaine described Miss Lou as “a national treasure,” while Pukupoo shared a heart emoji in tribute to the cultural icon.
The JCDC further noted that Miss Lou’s influence continues to be felt, stating: “Her words continue to live on and her legacy remains woven into the fabric of Jamaican identity.”
Miss Lou died in 2006 at age 86, but her contribution to Jamaican culture continues to resonate across generations.
