Justice Minister Delroy Chuck reports that thousands of criminal records have been expunged
Minister of Justice Delroy Chuck has reported that thousands of criminal records have been expunged.
This follows recent changes to the criminal records rehabilitation of offenders legislation.
Under the legislation persons who committed certain offences before 2005 may qualify for expungement.
Expungement takes factors into consideration such as the nature and gravity of the offence, social enquiry and psychological reports, demonstrated remorse or restitution and age at the time of the offence.
During his Sectoral Debate presentation, Mr. Chuck revealed that the commissioners are meeting up to two times per week to rectify the back log to clear records.
Meanwhile he urged ex-offenders to apply for expungement before the appointed time.
