Meeting involving stakeholders in public transport sector to be held today to resolve long-standing issues -Vaz

A meeting involving stakeholders in the public transport sector is to be held today in a bid to resolve some long-standing issues.

This is in the wake of a withdrawal of service by some taxi operators in Kingston yesterday.

The operators were calling on the Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) and the Transport Authority to consider offering subfranchise route servicing to them.

This as they claimed that some routes on which they have been operating for many years are either undeserved or not served at all by the JUTC.

Due to the JUTC holding the right to operate in the area, the taxi drivers said they are oftentimes prosecuted by the Transport Authority and traffic police for operating contrary to their license.

They called on Transport Minister Daryl Vaz to intervene.

In response to the call, Mr. Vaz said the issues will be discussed at a meeting set for noon at the Half-Way-Tree Transportation Centre.
