Medical expert says Jamaica records 100 cases of Tuberculosis and an average three deaths per year
Jamaica records at least one hundred cases of tuberculosis (TB), with an average of at least three deaths each year.
Senior Medical Officer at the National Chest Hospital, Dr Terry Baker, outlined statistics during a hospital tour by Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton yesterday.
TB is a highly infectious disease that primarily affects the lungs.
It came to national attention late last year following confirmation of outbreaks at police lock-ups.
The Health and Wellness Ministry said it was taking steps to control the increase in cases.
Dr. Baker said the hospital continues to partner with the National Security Ministry to monitor and treat infected persons at lockups and prisons.
She explained that although Jamaica’s TB death rate is low, citizens must remain vigilant.
Dr Baker warned that infection may spread in areas where overcrowding occurs.
