Mayor Swaby assures flood affected residents that they will get help
Kingston Mayor Andrew Swaby has sought to assure residents affected by yesterday’s floods that they will get help.
The mayor led a group of technocrats and other officials from the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation on a tour of affected areas today.
They surveyed the damage, met with residents and started coordinating relief and clean up efforts with emergency response agencies.
A woman said she has been living in Trafalgar Park, New Kingston, for over 20 years and this is the first time her home has been flooded.
She claimed that a gully, which runs alongside her home, has been blocked off, resulting in the water being redirected into her yard.
Mayor Swaby said the municipal authority will support displaced families and urged residents to follow safety advisories while recovery operations are carried out.
He noted that the team also observed damage to several roadways.
He said the relevant authorities are working to restore disrupted services and clear away debris.
Mayor Swaby said an assessment will be done over a 3 day period.
