Mayor Norman Scott claims innocence following assault charge
The attorney representing Spanish Town Mayor Norman Scott says his client is maintaining his innocence in relation to recent charges laid against him.
Mayor Scott has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and malicious destruction of property, following an incident at a polling station in St. Elizabeth on election day September 3.
Reports from the Black River police are that at about midday, 66 year old Scott, who was contesting the South East St. Elizabeth seat for the People’s National Party, visited the polling station and stayed a little longer than the allotted time.
Police say an agent’s attempt to inform him that his allotted time at the facility was up resulted in a commotion.
It’s reported that another agent intervened to quell the uproar and was allegedly struck to the face by Scott before his security detail removed him from the location.
Following the incident a report was made to the police and an investigation launched into the matter.
Summons for the offences were formally served on the mayor today.
He is scheduled to appear in court on Monday, October 13.
The mayor’s lawyer, Charles Gangasingh noted that while he respects the ongoing legal process it is important to highlight that Mayor Scott was the victim of an unprovoked attack by a mob.
Mr. Gangasingh is calling on the Police Commissioner to intervene in the matter.
He said it is troubling that the report issued by the police made no mention of an unprovoked attack on Mayor Scott.
This, he said, was despite the Mayor formally reporting an assault against him.
The lawyer also expressed confidence that when the evidence is presented in court his client will be vindicated.
