Management of Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited slated to meet with truckers to hash out issues affecting them

The management of Kingston Freeport Terminal Limited (KFTL) is slated to meet with truckers who operate at the port today to hash out issues affecting them.

The truckers reportedly withdrew their services this morning to register their discontent with the slow pace of processing at the port.

Speaking with IRIE FM News, KFTL Public Relations Manager, Trudy Belnavis, confirmed the strike but said no formal communication about the truckers’ grievances has yet been issued to management.

She notes, however, that a meeting is scheduled for today to discuss the concerns.

In the meantime, KFTL is advising that it is open for business and that its gate is operating normally.

Meanwhile, IRIE FM News caught up with two persons who operate trucks at the Kingston Freeport Terminal.

According to the truckers, the strike was not sanctioned by the Port Trailer Haulage Association.

When probed about their concerns, one of the truckers confirmed that slow processing was a major issue.

Another trucker highlighted safety concerns, noting that there needs to be a reduction in the number of equipment used to lift and load containers onto the trucks.

He said usually 18 are used, but suggests that the number is too high, as it results in congestion and accidents.
