A man who was seen on a viral video physically assaulting a nurse in St. Andrew on Tuesday evening, remains in police custody.
The video which surfaced last night, shows the man armed with what seems to be a firearm throwing the woman to the ground before stomping on her head.
This morning the police reported that the man had been charged, but later clarified that charges were yet to be laid.
Head of the St. Andrew North Police Acting Superintendent Randy Sweeney said the man is in custody and is expected to be charged soon.
He said the businessman should be charged with offences under the Firearms and Offences Against the Person Acts.
According to Superintendent Sweeney the incident resulted from road rage.
It’s understood that the man reportedly spat in the direction of the woman who then exited her vehicle which led to the altercation.
Superintendent Sweeney sought to assure the nation that the case is sensitive and is important to the police.
Meantime, the Nurses Association of Jamaica, NAJ is urging the authorities including the government to act swiftly in the matter.
President Dawn Marie Richards has condemned the incident.
She told Irie FM News that the incident has left nurses upset.
And the Firearm Licensing Authority, FLA says it is investigating the incident.
In a statement this morning, the authority confirmed that the individual involved is a licensed firearm holder.
FLA has sought to assure that a thorough investigation will be conducted and the necessary actions under the law will be taken.
It is also reminding licensed firearm holders that brandishing or using a firearm to intimidate or assault a person is a criminal offence.
The FLA said it will provide an update as soon as the board of authority has made a decision regarding this matter.
