Location identified to accommodate vendors displaced by Highgate market fire
A new location has been identified to accommodate some 40 vendors who were displaced by the fire which destroyed the Highgate market in St Mary on Saturday (July 16).
Public Relations Officer at the Jamaica Fire Brigade, Emilio Ebanks reported on Saturday, that the call about the fire was received at about 4:41 am, and 25 firefighters, with units from St Mary, St Ann and Portland responded.
There is no report of injury, and investigations are still ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.
The estimated loss suffered is still being tabulated.
Member of Parliament for St Mary Central, Dr Morais Guy told IRIE FM news this morning (July 18) that while monetary assistance has not yet been granted to the affected vendors, an open area has been identified, and plans are in motion to acquire the property for the victims.
Noting that the fire would’ve thwarted the vendors’ efforts at selling their produce over the weekend, Dr. Guy said they are suffering.
