Local Govt ministry plans to spend $350 m on refurbishing sanitary facilities

Local government minister Desmond McKenzie says the government intends to spend a further $350 m to refurbish sanitary facilities across the country.

He notes that last year $200 m was spent on public sanitary facilities especially those located at  markets.

The local government minister notes that some persons have criticised his opening of such a facility in Junction, St. Elizabeth today.

He says persons should be supporting the opening, instead of pouring cold water on it due to political reasons.

Mr. McKenzie states that people should not discredit or politicise programmes or events which benefit the people.

Mr. McKenzie says for the next five months, there will be no cost to use the sanitary facility in Junction.

In addressing concerns about homeless persons possibly sleeping in the sanitary convenience, he says the authorities will have discussions with poor relief department at the municipal corporation to identify a location for a drop in centre.

Mr. McKenzie is also urging residents to take care of the facility.
