Local Government authorities have contributed significantly to Jamaica’s development, with nearly $150 billion earned from building permits in 2024.

That’s the declaration from Portfolio Minister, Desmond McKenzie.

He was speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony for the expansion of Loshusan Supermarket New Kingston, formerly John R Wong.

The minister acknowledged that there are issues within the local authorities but noted that positive strides are being made.

He pointed to the 6% increase in building applications submitted to the local authorities last year when compared to 2023.

Last year’s total submissions represent an investment of $87.7 billion.

3,598 permits were issued, representing revenue of $149.7 billion.
