Lobby group calls on UN to send strong signal to countries that repatriate Haitians without due process
Attorney-at-law and Founder of Freedom Imaginaries, Malene Alleyne, says the United Nations, U.N., should send a strong signal to countries including Jamaica that continue to repatriate Haitian migrants without due process.
The statement follows the repatriation of several Haitians who were being held at police lock ups across the island last evening.
Some of them reportedly left children behind.
Yesterday’s repatriation exercise comes on the heels of the return of 20 Haitians to their country on October 6, a day after they arrived in Portland by boat.
Speaking with IRIE FM News this morning, Ms. Alleyne said continuing such activity is a breach of several international human rights treaties.
She said the U.N. should respond to the situation.
Ms. Alleyne said Jamaica is also in breach of the CARICOM treaty.
