Jamaican swimmers make their entries at 2024 World Short Course Championship
Jamaicans Leanna Wainwright, Sidrell Williams and Jessica Calderbank opened their campaign at the World Short Course Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary, but failed to get past the first round.
Wainwright, the national junior record holder, came up short in her quest to advance to round of 16 in the women’s 100m backstroke when she placed 5th in heat 2 in 1:04.18 seconds to finish 51st overall out of 63 competitors. Her effort also saw her missing the Jamaican 15-17 and overall record of 1:03.44.
The Montego Bay High standout returns to action on Thursday in another individual outing when she contests the women’s 50m backstroke. She will swim from lane 3 in heat 1.
Williams meanwhile had to settle for an 8th place finish in heat 4 in the men’s 50m butterfly, posting a time of 25.60 seconds to finish 63rd out of 77 athletes.
Calderbank was the best placed CARIFTA, Caribbean and CCCAN swimmer on the opening day after her time of 29.97 seconds saw her end 5th in heat 3 and 34th overall out of 49 participants in the women’s 50m butterfly.
Williams, Wainwright & Calderbank will now turn their attention to the mixed 4×50 metre freestyle where they will team up with Nathaniel Thomas.
That event takes place on Wednesday with Williams leading off, followed by Thomas and Calderbank with Wainwright on anchor.
The Jamaican quartet will swim from lane 2 in heat 1.
