Leanna Wainwright breaks national record at World Short Course Swimming Championships
Leanna Wainwright has established new Jamaican record in the 15-17 girls 50 metre backstroke.
The lone junior of Jamaica’s four-member team, Wainwright wrote her name in the record books by swimming 29.54 seconds on day 3 of the 2024 World Short Course Swimming Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
Her effort saw her finish third in heat 2, however, Wainwright who was positioned in lane 3, came up short in her quest to advance to the round of 16 after finishing 41st overall out of 56 competitors.
The Montego Bay High standout returns to action on Friday when she teams up with Sidrell Williams, Nathaniel Thomas and Jessica Calderbank in the mixed 4×50 metre freestyle where they will swim from lane 6 in heat 2.
Calderbank, in the meantime, will also feature in the women’s 100 metre butterfly on Friday where she will swim from lane 5 in heat 2 while Thomas will be positioned in lane 9 in heat 3 in the men 100 metre butterfly.
