Lawsuit looming as 22 men detained in Trelawny demolition plan legal action

Written bySugar Ray Thomas

The 22 men who were detained on Tuesday morning ahead of the demolition of houses in Cooper’s Pen, Trelawny, will be taking legal action against the state.

Attorney Donovan Collins told IRIE FM News today that his law firm has begun the process of filing a lawsuit on behalf of the men for false imprisonment and breach of their constitutional rights relating to their detention.

Mr. Collins said the men were given no reasons for their detention.

He said the men were released late Tuesday afternoon without being charged.

Mr. Collins said the men lost property in the demolition exercise.

He added that one man’s house was demolished, resulting in his young baby and the child’s mother becoming homeless.
