Lawmen warn of trend where people are being abducted by motorists pretending to be taxi operators

The police are warning of a trend in kidnappings where people are being abducted by motorists, pretending to be taxi operators.

In light of recent incidents, involving the disappearance of women and children, Detective Inspector in the National Strategic Anti-Gang Division, Paulette Wynter-Crosfield said persons are being forced to do ATM withdrawals.

She has revealed that some motorists posing as taxi operators are holding victims at gunpoint in efforts to fulfill their demands.

She urged commuters to be vigilant and travel with licensed taxi operators.

Detective Inspector Crosfield advised persons to take pictures of the vehicle, license plate and even the driver.

She also made mention of fake kidnapping reports by teens, noting that it is a criminal offence

She said of the 18 cases reported last year, only two were genuine.

Four cases have been reported so far this year with only two being legitimate.

Out of the two legitimate cases, six persons have been charged.

Detective Inspector Crosfield also highlighted that in all cases persons are returned home safely, hence a 100% success rate for kidnapping cases.
