Late track & field analyst Hubert Lawrence to be honoured at 46th Milo Western Relays
The 46th staging of the Milo Western Relays, set for Saturday, February 8, at GC Foster College, will pay tribute to the late sports journalist Hubert Lawrence, who passed away last year.
Lawrence, a longtime advocate and supporter of the meet, will be honoured for his significant contributions to the event, spanning from its early days at Cornwall College to its time at Catherine Hall Stadium and GC Foster College.
Over the years, Lawrence was more than just a journalist — he became a familiar voice and presence at the Western Relays. He not only wrote extensively about the meet but also took on roles as an analyst and announcer, sharing his expertise and passion with fans and participants alike. His dedication to the event was further evident through his contributions to the event’s magazine, where he regularly penned articles on a variety of topics close to his heart.
This year’s Milo Western Relays promises to be another exciting showcase of athletic talent, with several key highlights. For the second consecutive year, the throws — including the discus and shot put — will be featured for both girls and boys at the high school level, an addition that was introduced in 2024. Additionally, the popular Invitational 60 meters for clubs and institutions will return at the request of senior-level coaches.
The action-packed day, which kicks off at 10:00 AM, will include a range of events such as relays for all classes (prep, primary, high schools, and clubs/institutions), hurdles, and field events including long jump, triple jump, and high jump. There will also be sprint races in the 100m, 400m, and 800m, as well as the 3000m and 1500m races.
