Land titles for Albion Heights handed over to the Rastafari Coral Gardens Benevolent Society
Land titles for Albion Heights in Montego Bay, St. James have been officially handed over to the Rastafari Coral Gardens Benevolent Society.
A permanent home for Rastafari elders is also set to be established.
The move is part of a broader programme of reconciliation with the Rastafari community, in recognition of atrocities committed against members in Coral Gardens in 1963.
The incident saw several persons being killed and maimed during a violent altercation between police and Rastafarians.
While speaking at the handing over ceremony, Culture Minister, Olivia Grange described the event as a sacred step forward, built on justice and respect.
She added, that to date, over $130 million has been donated to the Rastafari Coral Gardens Trust Fund.
