Lakers’ Deandre Ayton Donates US$100,000 to Jamaica’s Hurricane Relief Effort

Los Angeles Lakers center Deandre Ayton has pledged US$100,000 to support relief and rebuilding efforts across Jamaica following the devastation caused by Hurricane Melissa.

Ayton, whose mother hails from St. Elizabeth—one of the parishes hardest hit by the Category 5 storm—shared the announcement in a heartfelt social media post, expressing his deep emotional connection to the island and its people.

“I was just in my mom’s hometown this summer, helping open a community center for the next generation — a space meant to give hope and opportunity to the kids growing up where she did,” Ayton wrote.

“Seeing those same communities now impacted by Hurricane Melissa breaks my heart.”

The 27-year-old added that his contribution is aimed at providing both immediate and lasting assistance.

“I’m pledging $100K to support both immediate relief and long-term rebuilding efforts across Jamaica,” he said.

Earlier this summer, Ayton launched the Ayton Family Foundation’s first Jamaican project at the Cedar Spring Community Center in St. Elizabeth, focused on youth development and community empowerment.

The former number one overall NBA Draft pick becomes the latest international athlete to assist Jamaica’s recovery. Former NASCAR Xfinity and Truck Series champion Greg Biffle also pledged US$500,000 and has committed to personally coordinating relief transport once conditions permit.
