Kishane Thompson out-duels Noah Lyles in sizzling 100m showdown in Poland

Olympic silver medallist Kishane Thompson delivered a statement performance at the Wanda Diamond League meeting in Silesia, Poland, storming to victory in the much-anticipated men’s 100 metres showdown against Olympic champion Noah Lyles.

Thompson clocked a meet record 9.87 seconds to secure the win, edging a fast-finishing Lyles, who posted a season’s best 9.90 seconds in their first head-to-head clash since the Paris Olympic final. U.S. national champion Kenny Bednarek was third in 9.96, while Jamaica’s Ackeem Blake placed eighth in 10.11.

The women’s 100 metres also provided fireworks, with Jamaican national champion Tia Clayton running a sensational new personal best 10.82 seconds for second place. The race was won by American world leader Melissa Jefferson-Wooden, who blazed to a meet record 10.66 seconds. Veteran Marie-Josée Ta Lou-Smith of Ivory Coast claimed third in 10.87, while Tina Clayton narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth in 10.91. World champion Sha’Carri Richardson managed sixth in 11.05.

Jamaica’s second victory on the day came courtesy of world 200m champion Shericka Jackson, who signalled a strong return to form by clocking a season-best 22.17 seconds to win the women’s 200 metres. Brittany Brown (22.21) and Favour Ofili (22.25) completed the podium.

In the sprint hurdles, world champion Danielle Williams produced a brilliant new personal best 12.31 seconds but finished fourth in the women’s 100m hurdles. The event was won by Olympic champion Masai Russell, who clocked a blistering 12.19 seconds — a Diamond League and meet record, and the third-fastest time in history. Jamaicans Ackera Nugent (12.43) and Megan Tapper (12.66) finished seventh and ninth, respectively.

In the men’s 110m hurdles, Orlando Bennett (13.25) and Olympic champion Hansle Parchment (13.27) placed fifth and sixth, with victory going to American Cordell Tinch in a meet record 13.03.

The women’s 400m hurdles saw Commonwealth Games silver medallist Shiann Salmon run a season-best 54.56 for fifth, while Dutch superstar Femke Bol stormed to victory in a world-leading 51.91 seconds. In the men’s equivalent, world silver medallist Roshawn Clarke was sixth in 48.81.

The event was won by world record holder Karsten Warholm of Norway in world lead, Diamond League and meet record 46.28 seconds.

On the field, Jamaican athletes produced solid efforts but just missed the podium. Romaine Beckford placed fourth in the men’s high jump with 2.25m, Ackelia Smith was seventh in the women’s long jump with 6.52m, and national shot put champion Danniel Thomas-Dodd finished fifth in the women’s event with 19.19m. Rajindra Campbell was sixth in the men’s shot put, throwing 21.58m.
