JUTC saves over $31million following significant disruption in fuel theft
The significant disruption of fuel theft saved the State-run Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) and taxpayers over $31 million between November last year and February this year.
This was revealed by Transport Minister, Daryl Vaz at a press conference at the Half-Way-Tree Transport Centre this morning.
Mr. Vaz explained that the estimated market value of stolen Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) from the Spanish Town Depot is as high as $26.8 million per month.
He added that if sustained for twelve months, the cost of fuel theft would amount to more than $322.1 million.
The Transport Minister said to cauterize the illegal activity, in January the JUTC executed joint operations with the Spanish Town police, which resulted in multiple seizures of stolen ULSD and significant arrests.
The disruptive efforts included intelligence gathering, new and strict bus dispatch procedures, 24-hour police deployment on the depot and ongoing operational collaboration with the police.
He said the joint operations have significantly disrupted fuel thefts, resulting in a substantial drop in the take-on of ULSD at the JUTC Spanish Town depot for February 2025 compared to previous months.
Mr. Vaz outlined the comparative data for ULSD take-on at the JUTC.
