JUTC investigating incident in which a student fell from one of its school buses
The Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) says it is investigating an incident in which a student fell from one of its school buses operated along the Buff Bay to Highgate Route in St. Mary.
The incident reportedly occurred on December 1.
Preliminary reports indicate that at approximately 12:10 P.M., the bus driver was alerted by students that a passenger had been pushed from the vehicle.
According to JUTC, the driver immediately stopped the bus, assessed the situation, and ensured that the 14-year-old student received urgent medical attention.
A JUTC dispatcher transported the student to the Annotto Bay Hospital, where she was treated for injuries and subsequently released.
JUTC said the dispatcher also made efforts to engage the student’s parents and provide updates on the situation.
JUTC noted that it reported the matter to the Jamaica Constabulary Force and the bus was examined by the Island Traffic Authority.
It said initial assessments confirmed no mechanical defect with the bus door.
The incident remains under investigation by both the police and JUTC’s internal security team.
The company said it is cooperating fully with all authorities and reiterated that student safety and well-being remain a top priority.
JUTC assured that appropriate action will be taken once investigations are concluded.
Meantime, the Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) which brought the matter to public attention yesterday is calling for answers.
PNP Caretaker for West Portland Doreen Campbell said the student is from the constituency.
She is questioning why no supervisor was aboard the bus.
