Judge warns Attorneys in the Vybz Kartel re-trial hearing to use time wisely

Lawyers participating in the retrial hearing for entertainer Vybz Kartel and his three co-accused are being warned to use their time wisely when making submissions.

Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop made the call at the Court of Appeal this morning as defense lawyers set out on day two of the hearing to prove that it would not be in the best interest of justice to order a retrial for their clients.

Justice McDonald-Bishop said the defense and prosecution must be economical with their time as the matter cannot go beyond Friday.

She suggested that with substantial written submissions to be heard, lawyers should use one or two hours to put those submissions forward.

Kartel, whose real name is Adidja Palmer, Shawn “Shawn Storm” Campbell, Andre St. John and Kahira Jones had their murder convictions overturned by the Privy Council in March.

They were convicted of the 2011 murder of Clive “Lizard” Williams.

The Privy Council also ruled that the matter be sent back to Jamaica’s Court of Appeal to determine whether or not a retrial should occur.

Justices McDonald-Bishop, Paulette Williams and David Fraser are deciding the case.
