The Jamaica Public Service (JPS) is working to restore power to customers who experienced outages today due to a squall line that began affecting the island just after midday.

JPS said approximately 50,000 customers or about 7% of its total were affected.

The power company confirmed that the squall line brought unusually strong winds, causing sporadic outages in several communities across Kingston and St. Andrew, St. Catherine, Clarendon and Manchester.

JPS Senior Vice President of Energy Delivery, Blaine Jarrett said more than 50% of the initially affected customers have been restored.

He also explained that as the system continues to move across the island, more customers may lose supply.

JPS is urging the public to exercise caution, especially around fallen wires.
