Jolyan Silvera charged with murder of wife Melissa, could face more charges later
More charges could be laid against former parliamentarian Jolyan Silvera who was charged by police today, with the murder of his wife, Melissa.
Head of the crime portfolio Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitz Bailey gave an update on the case, this afternoon.
He confirmed that Silvera was charged around midday.
It was initially reported that Melissa died in her sleep, of natural causes, last November.
However, during a post mortem examination, bullet fragments were found in her body.
The police upgraded the case to a murder investigation, leading to the murder charge being laid against the former politician today.
DCP Bailey said further charges could be laid against Silvera, as the investigation progresses.
He commended the team that worked on the case, adding that the investigation is indicative of integration within the force.
DCP Bailey added that the case is not an easy one, but scientific knowledge is being effectively applied.
Meantime, commanding officer for the Major Investigation Division, Superintendent Richard Hylton, said cops who visited the incident scene, described it as being not normal.
He noted that efforts had been made to conceal evidence in the case.
Meanwhile, the lawyer representing former parliamentarian Jolyan Silvera, who has been charged with the murder of his wife Melissa, says the case will be assessed to determine how best to proceed.
