JLP welcomes court’s decision to lift interim injunction in Portmore parish status matter
The Jamaica Labour Party has welcomed the court’s decision to lift an interim injunction in the matter relating to Portmore, paving the way for it to be granted parish status.
This after the Peoples National Party filed a lawsuit against the legislation recently passed by parliament and approved by the Governor General, citing constitutional breaches, among other things.
Last week, the Constitutional Court granted the PNP an interim injunction, telling the legal teams for both political parties to return to court yesterday, to present their arguments for and against  granting Portmore parish status.
At the end of yesterday’s deliberations, Chief Justice Bryan Sykes ruled against the application for an injunction.
Member of Parliament for East Central St. Catherine, Alando Terrelonge, said the Chief Justice also accepted the government’s position that the act making Portmore the 15th parish would only come into operation after the completion of the procedure outlined in section 67 of the constitution.
He described the court ruling as a win for the people of Portmore and the government.
