JLP calls for PNP General Secretary’s resignation; Opposition to pursue legal action against JLP’s “reckless smear campaign”
The ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) has doubled down on its call for Opposition People’s National Party (PNP) Member of Parliament, Dr. Dayton Campbell to resign from three positions.
The call follows allegations of the misuse of public funds for political purposes linked to the Kingston and St. Andrew Municipal Corporation (KSAMC).
In the Senate on Friday, Government Senator Abka-Fitz Henley called for Dr. Campbell to be removed as a Commissioner of the Electoral Commission of Jamaica.
This morning, senior member of the JLP’s communications team, Marlon Morgan reiterated that call, adding that Dr. Campbell should also be removed as the PNP’s General Secretary and Spokesperson on Agriculture.
He is also calling for Kingston Mayor, Andrew Swaby to offer a more direct and substantial response to the allegations.
According to Mr. Morgan, the statement provided by the KSAMC last week was grossly inadequate.
In a statement last Friday, Mayor Swaby said Municipal Corporations do not disburse cash.
He stated that at no point did the KSAMC authorize or facilitate cash disbursements to any individual.
He said if any such transaction took place, it was not sanctioned by the Corporation and did not involve public funds.
The JLP is also calling for an audit to be conducted of all Municipal Corporations controlled by the PNP.
In the meantime, the PNP said it will be pursuing legal action against what it calls the JLP’s reckless smear campaign.
In a statement this afternoon, the PNP rejected the claims, describing the JLP’s comments as baseless and defamatory.
The PNP also noted that it has full confidence in Dr. Campbell and Kingston Mayor Andrew Swaby, who have been unjustly targeted.
According to the PNP, these malicious and politically motivated accusations—without a shred of credible evidence—are nothing more than a cowardly attempt to deflect attention from the JLP’s governance failures and corruption scandals.
Meanwhile, Chair of the PNP, Angela Brown Burke said the Party is challenging the JLP and its operatives to submit legitimate evidence to law enforcement authorities.
