The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) has called on the National Water Commission (NWC) to explain how a proposed tariff increase, if approved by the regulator, would affect hoteliers and other tourism stakeholders.

The NWC has applied to the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) for a 51% tariff increase.

The application was submitted last week and is being reviewed.

If approved, the increase would result in higher water bills for the NWC’s approximately 500,000 customers.

Reacting to the application, JHTA President O’Brian Heron said the association recognizes the need for NWC to invest in system upgrades while placing its operations on a sustainable financial footing.

However, he said the company’s request for a tariff increase raises more questions than answers at this stage.

Mr. Heron called on the NWC to explain how the proposed increase would affect various customer categories including hotels and attractions which are among the commission’s larger commercial users.

He said if the increase is approved, the NWC must outline the levels of service reliability and water quality customers can expect, as well as the reduction in system losses that will be achieved and the time frame for delivering these improvements.

Mr. Heron said the JHTA looks forward to meaningful consultations with the NWC on the matters raised.
