JHTA amplifies call for Air B&B to be regulated
The Jamaica Hotel and Tourist Association (JHTA) has amplified the call for the Airbnb segment of the tourism industry to be regulated.
JHTA President Robin Russell said there needs to be a level playing field, so that all stakeholders can benefit from Airbnb offerings.
Russell expressed concern that some small villa operators are not benefiting from Airbnb bookings, because large scale operators disingenuously market their properties as Airbnb.
He also expressed concern that some Airbnb operators do not comply with health and safety laws, putting those who comply at a disadvantage.
He noted that players in both the All-inclusive and Airbnb can co-exist, as the tourism sector is market driven, with travellers now wanting to visit destinations for the experience factor.
But the growth in Airbnb offerings must be accompanied by compliance with regulations.
